Taking cosmetic surgery to another level 1 Year, 1 Month ago
The "designer vagina" is the hot new trend in cosmetic surgeries in London. It has partly been fuelled by idealised images of genitalia shown in graphic sexual films and in women's magazines.
Now African women are following suit, although apparently with more caution.
Dr Julian Bassin, a gynaecologist in Cape Town, specialising in this field, says he sees a "steady stream" but not a big number of women wanting to reduce their labia.
This is usually because they don't like the look of the vaginal structure or they find it uncomfortable in sexual situations if the labia minora protrudes past the labia majora.
Another common reason is they're not comfortable wearing panties or swimwear or because they can't ride a horse or a bike without feeling discomfort.
Dr Bassin confirms that exposure to films which contain graphic sexual content is one of the main incentives for women wanting this kind of surgery.
He also sees a number of women who want laser vaginal rejuvenation - tightening the vagina - to enhance sexual gratification.
To date there are no figures available in Africa, but in UK,(Britain)USA and Australasia,, doctors wrote in the British Medical Journal recently that the number of "labial reductions" carried out in National Health Service hospitals had trebled to 1950 a year over five years.
Researcher Lih Mei Liao said more research was needed into long-term benefits of surgery.
