Mhhhh As long as the National Anthem still holds this verse:

OH UGANDA THE LAND THAT FEEDS US BY SUN AND FERTILE SOILS GROWN.......WE SHALL ALWAYS STAND THE PEARL OF AFRICAS CROWN.

Mother Uganda shall always be the "PEARL OF AFRICA" other factors remaining constant.

Omuwereza wa pulogulaamu ya FSS we yabuuza ekibuuzo ekyo nassooka nenziramu mu bwangu ennyo nti
*absolut inte* nedda Uganda is nolonger a pearl of Africa naye laba we nafumitiriza ne nesigama kunsonga zino wammanga;-

Abazungu oba abantu bonna abatuuma Uganda the pearl of Africa basinzira ku climatic and social conditions, not politically! (embeera yobudde, ebyobutonde, nembera yabantu abali mu nsi) omunabudu kyayita freindly people(hospitality of people)

kubanga laba gwe emigga, ensozi, enyanja, ebibira nga byona biri naturally not man made! Naye kale olwokubeera mbu ensi eri mu political and economic crisis ekyo tekigijjaako kubeera the pearl of Africa, bwonawulira enkya mbu lake victoria and mtn rwenzori shifted to sudan, then you will say uganda is nolonger the pearl of Africa!

Hmmmm let the debate rage on.

The "Pearl of Africa" - was how Winston Churchill, moved by Uganda's great beauty, declared it when he visited in 1907. Later in 1908, in his book 'My African Journey', Churchill made it official and thus the nickname the ''Pearl of Africa" was adopted.

My argument here focusses on the fact that this was a nickname based on Uganda's alluring features which included shimmering lakes, grand mountain ranges and impenetrable forests where chimpanzees and mountain gorillas roamed wild and free, and most importantly her people.

For nicknames to hold true, they have to be descriptive. Examples here. 'Kaami Katono' is by description a small sometimes short man. 'Nagagga' is by any means a stinking rich person.

But also nicknames are subjective. Just as one society's 'nagagga' could be another's 'muwejere.' It is this subjectivity and the change of circumstances over time that my argument is based on.

Uganda then was, in Churchill's eyes, the 'Pearl of Africa' especially in reference to the neighbouring countries. 100 years and more have not been without their toll. Wars, disease and other mostly man made factors have impacted on the country and her people at large.

We all remember the Mabira saga. Take a trip to the shores of Lake Nalubaale today. Acres of it are the perfect example of a neglected resource. Our capital city doesn't have a single conserved green space.

Now many people have said that Churchill did not base his nickname on the political and economic climate of the country. Whereas this is so true, we have to understand that people's welfare and general standards of living are directly controlled by these factors. Examples? Trees will be felled for charcoal if electricity is not running. Water will be contaminated if sewage systems are not treated. Opportunistic diseases will claim lives if people can not afford the medicines etc.

And to appreciate this even further, we have to look at the country holistically. Our brothers and sisters in the North of the country have spent more than a decade ravaging in wars of sorts. Whole generations do not know what it means to have a decent education or even a good night's sleep.

During the Family Sunday Show of 14/09/08 here on Connect when this issues was first raised, as one of the hosts of the show the question I had to answer a few times was whether a name is not for life. A name certainly is for life. But a nickname is not.

And I'd like to finish by saying that we do not qualify to have the nickname any more. But we can work towards having it again. I love my country and it is out of such love that I go out on a quest for where things went wrong.

This is only my opinion and God knows I could be wrong.

1907-------1908----there was no dream for africans to have independece--from the colonial masters---then this great leader said his heart here is the best-----UGANDA-----after controlling his matwale--that was good beacause uganda is so special-----due to its location on the equator---we dont have so much earthquakes--everything--is too nice----a song of jimmy katumba(R.I.P)---describes best our motherland--of today with president Yoweri Museveni-----Uganda should be indusrilized----destroy..mabira,banana plantations, coffee plantations- tea plantations---to sell the land to investors---then uganda looses its title as the pearl of africa.OF TODAY THE MOTHERLAND IS NOT THE PEARL OF AFRICA---GOD SAVE UGANDA.
