Talk about it Bikolwa..... It seems that Britain is a nation that is obsessed with queuing for just about everything. Queueing seems to be an integral part of the British culture and lifestyle that if someone dared to abolish it, their might be a nasty revolution.
I guess they are responsible for introducing it in our (their) education system back home in lovely dusty Uganda. But me as an ethnic minority in Britain, I can't help but find it all a bit irritating.
It most hit me just the other day, when funnily enough I was standing in a queue at a cash machine (ATM) in this horrid Autumn rain and winds. The British will stand in a line for just about anything. Supermarkets, bus stops, taxis, the post office, the cinema and just about anything else.
The odd thing is where most event organisers keep their doors closed till the last minute so that the people who come early can stand and form a queue. This, am told, gives the impression of a huge event and encourages more people to come and join.
But the British say it is polite to queue. And they hate queue jumpers. Which reminds of those big boys at school who always pushed their way to the front in everything. May be they were not polite.
Interestingly though is how it catches on most of us foreigners. Anti bw'ogenda e bulya mbwa........
Can you imagine even Connect Uganda has a queueing system? I once called and the phone kept saying am caller number so and so....
