Children of Nsamo Primary School in Mukono stare at their burnt property yesterday

By Nicholas Kajoba

TWO dormitories were burnt and pupils’ property worth millions of shillings destroyed when fire broke out at Nsamo mixed Primary school in Seeta, Mukono district, on Sunday.

Nobody was injured in the blaze that erupted shortly after midday; moments after the first children had arrived for the new term.

Mattresses, clothes and books of over 20 pupils went up in flames.

The director of studies, Francis Banoba, said the two dormitories accommodated 45 pupils from Primary four to Primary one.

“We where shocked, we did not know where the fire came from,” Banoba said, adding that the Police were investigating the cause.

Teachers and residents struggled to stop the fire from spreading to nearby dormitories, using fire extinguishers, water and sand.

Occupants of the affected dormitories gathered their charred belongings. Other property lay in the compound as the school authorities tried to find a place to accommodate the pupils.

Nsamo Mixed Primary School is a private school. It has 500 pupils, 200 of whom had reported yesterday for the second term.

It is the second school fire in one month. In April, 20 pupils of Budo Junior School perished when their dormitory burned down.
