Learning all about good grooming and manners

STELLA NAKAKANDE

See, learn and practice" was the theme of the 2008 Kisakate organised by the Nabagereka of Buganda Sylvia Nagginda Luswata.

Kisakate is basically an event where children board in a school away from home and are equipped with the most basic and sophisticated of skills all in one go.

In Luganda, Kisakate is a word derived to mean an enclosure.

It dates as far as the ancient kings of Buganda. In the traditional setting, the Kabaka had chiefs who made it a point to fence their homesteads with long reeds. Within these homesteads, their children as well as those of their colleagues were groomed in cultural ideals. It is from this lot that the next Kabaka would choose another generation of chiefs, palace officials or even wives.

So for whoever wished their child groomed, even those in lower castes, the Kisakate (sometimes as per Buganda's counties) was always the option.

This time round, the grooming was done by tutors from university lecturers to ordinary women and men. It was moving to note that some of these actually boarded in the school together with the children.

Sunday 20th was when throngs of parents and onlookers flooded Mbogo Mixed Secondary School at Kawanda for the closure of the two week training camp.

Kisakate, where culture prevails, could be a theme to define the event, although it will only serve as an understatement.

The intake of participants tripled from 282 in 2007 to over 700 this year. Tribe was no issue. It was therefore no wonder that Ankole's Boaz Byaruhanga emerged as one of the best. And at the event, every one was a victor as each participant walked home with a certificate.

Jane Nayiga, a student of Lubiri S.S. carried home a 24-inch television courtesy of Samona for excelling among others. One would have thought that it is strictly a Baganda affair. That was just a misconception though. Essentially, it is not only the descendants of Kintu who require grooming in the best of manners, even those from Mundu and Sera, Iguru, Kairu and Kakama among others were involved. In the end, we are all Ugandans, aren't we?

It also cut across borders. There were children from Tanzania, and Congo.

The social status was also nothing to deter any one from participating, neither was physical disability. It was training for all youngsters from the age of 9 -18 at a cost of Shs102, 000 per head.

There were rather teary moments as well especially when physically handicapped Jeruminah Nabagala who came riding on a wheelchair donated by the sponsors of the event received a certificate engraved with her name and a loving hug from the Nabagereka, "our mother", as she was referred to during the event.

For Nabagala, the event was the first time she had gone out to watch the sun and actually discover that there is a blue sky and a world outside her charity home.

The emotional moments aside, the camp was all about learning in every way. The children did lots of arts and crafts like weaving mats and baskets, as well as knitting table cloths. This was aimed at improving their creative skills and opening their business eyes to all kinds of opportunities.

"We want these children to export these skills, we want them to learn and manifest what prevailed in the event," Mr. Aloysius Matovu Joy, one of the organisers said.

Business was however not all there was. Domestic skills were part of the package too. Children male or female were equipped with skills to help them manage homes and well be useful all the same. They were taught to peel and tie up food in the most sophisticated of ways with the acclaimed banana leaves. They were even taught how to watch the water in the food, clean the house and lay their beds.

In came the ssenga and kojja skills, advice the parents would rather skip. There were people to let the children in on this. And this for the children was enrichment.

Counselling was an addition to the package with children being educated on HIV/Aids and how best to protect themselves. Karate skills were taught and the struggle against Cross Generational Sex was enhanced.

The Kisakate was supported by Centenary Bank, Samona, Shoprite, Maganjo Grain Millers, Kinyara Sugar Works, Lweza Clays, Unilever, Britannia, Coca-Cola Company and Radio One among others.

A beautiful event, if I were to be asked, enriched with language, customs and tradition. So when the call is up for the aged like me, I guess kisakate will be the way to go.
